The Cramlington Camera Club celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021. Increasingly, members of the Club take their photographs digitally. Over the last few decades, they have built up an archive of “born-digital” photographs documenting Cramlington and further afield.
Northumberland Archives has made great advances in digital preservation in recent years, but these are not widely known about. Three years ago, we applied to Northumberland County Council’s Digital Board to buy the Digital Preservation system “Preservica”. Over the past year we have been “ingesting” existing digital holdings into the system. To date (2021), we have preserved over 300,000 digital files.
By working with the Camera Club we hope to raise the profile of the digital preservation work that we do and start conversations within the communities that they serve about the importance of preserving our digital heritage.
This project is supported by The Audience Agency’s Digitally Democratising Archives project thanks to funding from DCMS and the National Lottery, as part of The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s, Digital Skills for Heritage initiative.
