Film of Horse Procession Ref: BRO 1591
As part of its privileges under its royal charters, Berwick has always been entitled to hold two weekly markets (Wednesday and Saturday) and a May Fair - held at the end of that month. In the 1890s and early 1900s, the Berwick Horse Show and Procession became a popular part of the May Fair attracting many entries from both within the town and the surrounding area. Horses were very much a part of everyday life at that time – for transport and agriculture. The 21st Horse Procession and Show was held in Berwick in 1911, the year of the Coronation of George V. The horses were judged on the Parade near the Barracks and then went in a procession throughout the town before going across to Tweedmouth and Spittal . This clip shows the horses leaving the Parade, walking down Hide Hill and heading for Tweedmouth across the old Bridge. This footage gives an impression of how highly decorated the horses were and who was watching them
