The Berwick Horse Procession, held on 27th May 1911 attracted 48 entries who competed for a number of prizes, including the Mayor’s Prize. It was presented by James Weatherhead Plenderleith, Mayor of Berwick to the competitor with the greatest number of single prizes for horse and harness since the formation of the event in 1890. It was won by James Dixon who had won prizes at every show starting with first prize for horse and decoration in 1890. James and the other winners were presented with these certificates on the Town Hall steps in Marygate. There was a huge crowd watching the proceedings who were also entertained by the Amble Radcliffe Colliery Band, on holiday in Berwick at the time.

In 1911 James Dixon also received first prize for the best decorated lorry in keeping with the coming of age of the Procession and the Coronation Year and third prize for Class 1 Heavy Cart and Lorry Horses. James was employed by the Urban Sanitary Authority which was part of the Council, operating from their premises in Wallace Green.
