Rules of the Garrison of Berwick
Ref: BA / B7

Amongst the Borough Archives, there is a volume entitled “Rules of the Garrison and Town of Berwick which cover the period 1560 to 1577. The volume sets out various things that the soldiers could and could not do. These included rules about the playing of cards and the wearing of their uniform. The soldiers were only allowed to play at “dice or carde” for money during the 20 days of Christmas or “at any of the Gates of the towne or within the watch houses or market place of the Tolebooth”. Any money confiscated was to be used for the maintenance of the Queens bridge at Berwick.

From this entry, it is apparent that the Queen’s soldiers had a uniform which included a white and green jacket. If they did not wear the jacket, they could lose three days wages and be imprisoned for one day for the first offence and then be dismissed from the army for the second.
