Recompense for Houses

During the period of the roll, the new fortifications were being constructed at Berwick to protect the town from a Scottish invasion. To enable this to happen, it was decided to demolish and deface some houses – “for the better erecting and setting upp of the fortificac[i]ons". Those who were affected by this were paid compensation by the Crown. These included Richard Hatherwycke who was paid £10 for one house; Roger Robinson who was paid 100 shillings for one house and George Bullock who was paid £13 6s 8d for 7 houses. The total amount paid out was £229.
