Wanted Poster – John Donohue, 6 Sept. 1895
Ref : BA/M16/ 8

Until 1920, Berwick ran its own Police Force separate from the County. In the 1890s, the Force consisted of a Chief Constable (John Garden), 3 sergeants and 9 constables. The Police looked after law and order in Berwick , Tweedmouth and Spittal. As part of their work, they often issued “Wanted” posters or received them from different parts of the country. This one, looking for John Donohue was received in late 1895 from Huddersfield. A £2 reward was offered for his arrest for assaulting a police officer. A full description of Donohue and a line drawing of him are provided and also the reason why it was sent to Berwick – the town’s military and sea connections. There is no indication whether he was ever caught and brought to justice.
