Berwick is famous for its bridges – all three of them are worthy of painting. The Royal Border Bridge in particular has been a favourite subject of the many artists who have taken Berwick as their subject. When seen from a distance, the bridge has an elegance which belies the weight and heft of its construction. The Royal Border Bridge was a recurring subject of one of Berwick’s most celebrated artists, Frank Watson Wood, who painted it many times - often complete with a steam train crossing, contrasting with fishing boats sailing the River Tweed in the foreground. The distinguished railway artist Alan Lancaster painted the bridge many times. Most recently the Institution of Civil Engineers commissioned the artist Jon Hall (the Limner) to paint the bridge to commemorate its 150th year.
