Fuller’s Engravings of Berwick Barracks showing Parade Ground, 1799
Ref: BRO 1637/04

This engraving of Berwick Barracks was published in 1799 and shows not only the Barracks but also the Parade Ground used by the soldiers. The Barracks were built between 1717 and 1721 and were one of the first purpose built ones in the country. Prior to that, soldiers were billeted with local innkeepers and private individuals who struggled to get payment from the Government. The buildings were designed by Hawksmoor and according to Dr Fuller in 1799, could accommodate almost 600 men and 36 officers. By 1881, the Barracks had become the depot and headquarters of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB). It remained this until 1964. Now the buildings house a number of museums including the KOSB Regimental Museum and Berwick Town Museum and Art Gallery.
