Postcard of Berwick Old Bridge Ref: BRO 426/84
The “Old Bridge” or “Berwick Bridge” as it is known in Berwick is a Jacobean structure which was built during the time of King James I of England. When he came south to London via Berwick to be crowned King of England James was very unimpressed with the wooden bridge he had to use to cross the River Tweed which was prone to being washed away in floods. Therefore, he granted the town money to build the present stone bridge. Work on the bridge started in 1611 and was finally completed in 1634 although it was open to traffic from 1624. It was paid for by the Crown and for this reason detailed accounts had to be kept noting all expenditure. These records have survived and are kept in the Archives at Berwick.
