Their different careers took them away from Berwick, but they remained in contact with each other by letter and infrequent meetings. Rupert King suggested they start a journal, each of them contributing a letter every month, accompanied by sketches or photographs as desired, which would be collected by an “editor”, bound in a special paper cover and then circulated around the group. At the end of each year the material was bound into a single volume.
