James Wallace contributed many illustrations and sketches to the Quintet, designing frontispieces for each month, and the stories of his travels and activities in particular bring the volumes to life. The Quintet did not long survive him, as the remaining members felt unable to write to each other with the same enthusiasm after his premature death aged 39 in 1913.
