Fishing register entry for Agnes & Jane - Image Reference: SB 1/5
The AGNES & JANE was first registered as a fishing vessel at the port of Berwick on 22 September 1883. It was based at Holy Island and was owned by two local men, W & J. Wilson. The ship had the official number BK 1007 and weighed 20 tonns. Normally it had a crew of 6 who used nets to fish. The ship was broken up in 1912.
Under the Sea Fisheries Act of 1868, all fishing vessels were required to be registered at their local port and be given an official number. Two letters were used to identify the port (e.g BK for Berwick) followed by a number.
Fishing boat registers for the port of Berwick survive for the period 1869 to 1916. The main fishing ports within the registration district were St Abbs; Coldingham; Eyemouth; Burnmouth ( all in Scotland); Berwick; Spittal; Holy Island; North Sunderland; Beadnell; Newton by the Sea; Boulmer and Craster. The vessels mainly caught white fish and herring. A list of the fishing boats registered in the port of Berwick is available at the Berwick-upon-Tweed Record Office.
