List of crew and passengers on HMS Devaynes
Image Reference: BRO.937

This is a list of the Ship’s Company employed on the ship, the Lascars ( Indian sailors) and the passengers, both on the outward and inward journeys. The Captain of the vessel was Octavius Brook and the other crew included Howel Powel, the surgeon, Robert Ramsey, midshipman ( from Tweedmouth) and Okal Kais, the sailmaker.

The list indicates the position of each man employed on the ship, their country of origin and anything that happened to them during the voyage. For example, Robert Ramsey, left the ship at Calcutta to go into the "Country Service". Several other men include John Taylor, carpenter; John Finlay , seaman; Edmund Powel and Joseph Lindeman, both ordinary seaman - all died during the voyage. It also appears that a number of the crew were "Pressed" (forced into service with the Royal Navy) on board H.M. PIEDMONTAISE at Madras. These included William Burke and James Watts.

The ship did not have many passengers on the outward journey only Mrs Eliza Smith and Miss Maria Hoare - but there were 10 on the return journey.
