On 6 June 1745, a letter was received by Benjamin Grieve and John Lewins both of Berwick from the Office for Exchanging Prisoners of War about Thomas Ord. Thomas was on board the vessel, the THOMAS and BARBARY when it was captured by the French on 16 August 1744. He was taken as a hostage to Calais and had remained there because Benjamin Grieve and John Lewins, owners of the vessel had not paid the ransom money of £245
