Bamburgh burials from wreck of Pegasus, Aug. 1843

In July 1843, the steam boat PEGASUS which was travelling from Leith to Hull was wrecked off the Goldstone Rock near Holy Island and the Farnes.On board were 18 cabin passengers, 23 steerage passengers and a crew of 16. Only 6 of these people survived. For several months afterwards, the bodies of those on board were found in the open sea or washed up on the shore around Bamburgh.


Many of the victims were buried in Bamburgh Churchyard, including the Reverend John Morell MacKenzie and Louisa Howard.
