Patient 262/1946 (cont)
Gradual improvement is noted throughout early 1949 with discharge considerably less. The X-ray report comments that after three weeks on streptomycin the tibia appeared well defined compared with earlier x-rays and the sinus appeared to be healing, but no change to the first metatarsal. By March 1949 swelling in the legs had disappeared, the sinus was healed, there was no tenderness over the bone; streptomycin was discontinued. This rate of healing continued with further definition being apparent in x-ray images and the patient was able to get out of bed with the help of crutches. The patient was discharged with full movement in the left knee and ankle and the ability to bear weight on both legs with the aid of crutches.
This patient continued to be seen as an outpatient until 1956. During her visits as an outpatient her notes state that she was worried about scarring to the left leg from the healed sinuses which the physician offers to excise and re-suture if the matter is pressed further.
