Memorial Cots

Stannington was run and financed largely by the charitable organisation the Poor Children's Holiday Association (PCHA), with the local authorities also contributing by paying for the upkeep of each child they sent. However, and investment and additional costs had to be met by the PCHA themselves and their annual reports detail the many ways they obtained funds. This included monies earned as a result of bequests, fundraising events, and donations by local supporters and community groups. Allowing people to sponsor cots, or beds, in memory of someone was another method utilised by the charity.

There were dedicated cots to be found in many of the PCHA's facilities, not just Stannington, but we do have lists indicating who exactly offered their support to Stannington and who was remembered in this way throughout the sanatorium's wards. There are some names amongst the dedications already very familiar in the history of the sanatorium, such as Roland Philipson, responsible for providing the funds to establish the sanatorium, and the Hunter family who had been involved from the very beginning with Dr Hunter going on to there for many years. Others seem to represent local groups and employee organisations, such as the Newcastle Corporation Tramways Employees Medical Charities Fund, indicating that Stannington was highly regarded and well supported amongst many in the region.

There are some names listed in the 1939 report seen on the right that we know nothing more about but by making a contribution to the sanatorium their names were listed on a plaque in the sanatorium buildings in lasting memory. Unfortunately, the sanatorium buildings are no longer standing and it is not clear what happened to this board or likewise to many of the other memorial plaques around the facility that were photographed not long after it closed.
