About the Project

Everyday Life in a Northumbrian Manor

About the Project

Manorial records are often perceived as ‘difficult’ and the project aims to encourage usage by providing guidance to support researchers and to digitise and transcribe selected manorial records, making both the images and the transcripts available on these webpages.

We will also hold a series of free workshops across Northumberland to introduce members of the public to this important class of records. Details of the free workshops are published on our Events page – Events – Northumberland Archives. We will work with a school in Hexham using manorial records to investigate the history of Hexham Market. We hope that this will be an exemplar project that could be run with other schools. The project will culminate in a circulating exhibition and the launch of an online learning module.

The project began in May 2022 and will complete in November 2024. We will post content throughout the life of the project.
