Volunteers – Berwick

Everyday Life in a Northumbrian Manor

Berwick-upon-Tweed

Our Berwick-upon-Tweed group includes volunteers from Berwick, Wooler and other surrounding towns. They were our first group to start on the project, beginning in Autumn 2022.

Their work has focused on transcribing manorial records from Berwick, Tweedmouth and Spittal, as well as the volunteer’s local manors, such as Wooler, Lowick, Barmoor, Holy Island and Norham. The transcripts from these areas are very name rich, and fair to say, it has sometimes been a challenge for the volunteers to identify the old names! This hard work has certainly paid off though and has produced an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to research these manors, especially when trying to identify which manor their ancestors lived in.

The records include court rolls and call rolls from the mid-17th Century – mid-19th Century and really paint a picture of life in and around Berwick-upon-Tweed during those times.
