Volunteers – Newcastle
Everyday Life in a Northumbrian Manor
Newcastle upon Tyne
The Newcastle Society of Antiquities (SANT) and Explore Group were our first remote group to start on the project, they have been creating manorial transcripts since the end of 2022. They have tackled one of the more challenging sets of manorial records in our project, which come from Morpeth manor, and form a large collection with a wide variety of dates and hand-writing styles.
These records include a range of document types, including court rolls, call rolls, tenant lists and customs. Many of these are original documents, and some later copies. You will be able to see these transcripts on our website, and the variety of information to be found in the Morpeth set alone will showcase the importance of not overlooking manorial documents.
The Newcastle group have also worked on completing transcripts from Hexham manor and Tweedmouth and Spittal, with their records ranging in date from the 17th Century – 19th Century.
