Later Years
In her later years, Josephine temporarily
withdrew from public duties after the death of her husband,
George, from influenza in 1890, but soon began writing again,
producing biographies of her husband and of St. Catherine of
Siena, as well as her own memoirs.
At this point, her children were all living
independently, and had their own families. George had married
Maria St. Paul, and worked as a Senior Examiner in the Civil
Service. Arthur became a Professor of Natural and Experimental
Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews, and had two
children with his wife, Rhoda. Charles was a relief worker,
spending much of his time abroad in Africa, leaving his wife,
Margaret, at home.
In 1903, Josephine moved to Wooler to be closer
to George, who lived at nearby Ewart Park. She died in 1906
and was buried in Kirknewton.
