Seal from 1497 'grant of annuity' deed
NRO 452

Blanchland

Blanchland, a village on the Northumberland and County Durham border, became part of Nathaniel Crewe's estates through his marriage into the Forster family.

Unfortunately, there are not as many records within the Lord Crewe collection that relate to Blanchland as relate to Bamburgh. However, the records that do exist reflect a vibrant community many of whose family names remain in the area today.

The seal to the left is from a deed of 1497, it is amongst some the oldest material within the Lord Crewe collection. The Deed appears to be a 'grant of annuity' from the Abbot of Blanchland abbey. The seal could show an image of the Virgin Mary and Child.
