Perambulation of the Boundaries
The Lord Crewe papers include records of the 'perambulation'
of the parish of Blanchland, when parishoners and tenants of
the Lord Crewe estate walked the 'bounds' of the parish,
pausing as they passed certain landmarks to mark the extent of
the boundary. The Documents detail the names of the people of
Blanchland who participated in 1793, 1812 and 1839 and also
verify the geography of the parish boundaries, including a map
date 1793 which relates to the perambulation of that year.
During the 1793 perambulation John Champion was given the
bumps against 'Dead Frier Currack' as the following extract
describes:
"John Champion was taken up by two men and his bottom,
alias his backside was thumped or knowcked against this
currack five or six times."
