Markets
Markets have long been an important part of communities around the world. They provide an opportunity for trade and income.
For most of the Manorial period, market charters were issued to grant an important nobleman, often the Lord of the Manor, the right for a formal market to be held.
Market charters are often listed in Patent Rolls, Charter Rolls and Close Rolls.
The market charter would include rules such as which days, times, and the frequency of which markets were held. There were also rules about items that could be traded, weights and measures, costs, and taxes.
