Stop Motion Animation
Stop motion is an animation technique that uses small movements and lots of photographs to give the impression of movement in a story.
You will need:
Something to animate, e.g. modelling clay, a whiteboard and pen, small figurines
A background – this could be a set, a drawing, your cardboard model from the previous session
Something to record with – a phone, tablet, camera, GoPro
This Instructable provides a step by step guide to making a stop motion animation.
Storyboarding
Activity – Storyboarding
The first step in creating an animation is to come up with an idea.
In groups, come up with your idea – e.g. build your own manor, court room and consequences, marketplace scene.
Make a storyboard for your idea – what will happen, where will it take place, who are your characters?
Allocate roles within your animation group. Each person can have more than one role, and more than one person can do each role. This is the area that you will be responsible for in your group.
Directors – group leaders, oversee the creative vision of the film.
Camera operators – photograph each scene, make sure the camera is lined up correctly for each frame.
Scene/background designers – create the backgrounds, make sure the correct backgrounds are used for each scene.
Character designers/animators – create the characters, move them each frame.
Script supervisors – plan what is needed for each scene, check each set-up to make sure everything needed is included.
Once you have allocated roles, you can start making the animation!
Share your Creation!
Once the animations are complete, do a show and tell to celebrate your work.
Don’t forget to share your animations with Northumberland Archives! You could email us a copy or a link, or tag us on social media. We would love to see what you have made, it may even end up on this website!
